The Moon Landing and it’s influence on the World

The first moon landing took place on July 20th 1969, with an estimated 600 million viewers – this was a world record until 1981 when 750 million people watched the royal wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. The moon landing is easily considered to be mankind’s greatest achievement and the most iconic image of the 20th century. There is no doubt that this event would change the world and it has, whether the change is all good this is what I will argue.

The moon landing has become a significant influence on the genre of Science Fiction although it has not influenced great pieces of art around its time, until recently it has only been an influencing factor on todays films, influencing such films as Apollo 18 and Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon. It also influenced the soon to be released Gravity which is very critically acclaimed.

One of today’s most famous and recognisable quotes ever had came from Neil Armstrong as he took his and man’s first step on the moon “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” This quote has influenced countless numbers of people, young or old, rich or poor, no matter what this quote alone has caused significant change to the world.

Even after 40 years, the moon landing still has influential power over the people of today. There was a 40th anniversary event for the moon landing in which NASA streamed the original mission audio on its website in real time 40 years to the minute after the events occurred, this shows that people obviously still care about the events that took place over 40 years ago, it shows that it is a defining moment of our era and that it is considered to be mankind’s proudest moment as well.

The idea that some of the Apollo Moon landings were hoaxes invented by NASA and other agencies have came up many times in popular culture. Not all references to Moon landing conspiracy theories are in support of them, but the ideas which are expressed in them have become “a popular meme to reference, both in humour and sincerity.”

I have to conclude that the moon landing was a major influential event that has changed the world of today, creating the most inspirational quote of all time and influencing countless numbers of people and also influencing films of today.

  1. Simple and solid summary here of the moon landing and its influence–good work. Don’t forget to include references if you are putting in quotes (which is a good thing to do). You mention some examples which is very useful and spot on. Now, I’d like you to think specifically about how the space race and the competition with Russia to the moon affected film and the media in the 1960s. What examples are there of this issue? Write three examples below.
